“Our study shows that the first six days of life are the time point of highest risk for being killed in South Africa among children under 5 years, with the risk declining thereafter.” Gender Differences in Homicide of Neonates, Infants, & Children under 5y in SA: Results from the Cross-Sectional 2009 National Child Homicide Study – PLOS

“63% of the country’s youngest – were living in poverty affecting their physical, cognitive and emotional development…close to 3,969,000 children were developmentally compromised because they were not receiving the services and care they needed.” The South African Early Childhood Review

“Violence happens if there are no consequences… What does it say about the parents who are prepared to burn their children’s future?” Professor Adam Habib 21 May 2016

“We are an incredibly violent society. We have normalised violence and it is seamless from school to university. South Africa is the only country where we burn down schools and libraries….You cannot police behaviour to what you want it to be, we need a shift in the value system.” Professor Jonathan Jansen 21 May 2016

What is Courage? Courage is a powerful toolkit that can work inside any child protection organization, community, family or individual to help enhance the child protection work that you do. Child protection is the prevention and responding to violence, exploitation and abuse against children. Our aim is to give you the practical tools you will need to develop a child protection strategy that: –Recognises the rights and needs of all children. –Helps you to identify where they are being abused or overlooked. –Provides you with the strategies you will need to resolve the child protection challenges that you encounter. –Empowers yourself, your organization and your community to make a difference, in partnership with other like-minded individuals or organisations. –Measures and evaluates your progress to ensure that the difference you make is effective and sustainable.

Empowering child protection officers and organsiations

“I currently use Courage Child Protection as a tool to teach coaches, educators and community art counsellors about children's rights and the adult's duties towards the protection of children. This is central to my work in child development as the abuse of children's rights limits and damages development in a fundamental way. I have chosen Courage from many tools I have used over my 24 years in the child protection field and find it to be innovative, engaging, clear and very importantly consultative. I strongly recommend the programme and feel it is making a massive contribution along the whole continuum of adults in the child's world, and in so doing ensuring children's full potential is reached.” - Luke Lamprecht

“If you feel that you’ve covered the world in Child Protection, try the Courage program and you will notice that you haven’t even started.” “The program gives you more COURAGE to confront the community at large and make a difference”

Developing practical skills in tertiary education

“The Courage programme is highly recommended for anyone working with children. The material is user-friendly, engaging and relevant to different child protection contexts. An amazing programme well put together!” – Dr Ajwang’ Warria “Courage is taking a ‘bottom-up’ approach rather than a ‘top-down’ approach. You are recognizing the strengths all people in a community have to bring about meaningful change…Its one of the most exciting developments I have seen in social work for a long time” – Pricilla Gerrand

Engaging with communities

“The Courage material made the dialogue on adoption different and special, it opened up discussion as the people did not have to think hard but they had scenario that channelled their thinking from the material in front of them.” - Lillian Thobejane Directorate: Restorative Services and Services to Children Gauteng DSD

Leading global best practice in child protection

“Millions of children today are not fully protected. Many of them deal with violence, abuse, neglect, exploitation, exclusion or discrimination every day. Such violations limit their chances of surviving, growing, developing and pursuing their dreams. Swedish Foundation for Children without Parental Care is working to promote and protect children’s rights in more than 10 countries. We are working to decrease the gap between policy, legislation and implementation. To achieve this, it is key to strengthen the knowledge, attitudes and skills of different duty-bearers; parents, caregivers, teachers, social workers, police and community at large in order to protect children rights. Today the world is filled by a vast flora of methods and toolkits – all said to be the best way to improve the situation for children at risk. When introduced to the COURAGE program, with its innovative and interactive approach and intriguing maps, we at once realized that this program can be used in any country in the world and in any context and have a great impact. We have been working in this field more than 45 years – COURAGE exceeds all expectations and has an overall impact. It is user-friendly and can be used for a range of different purposes and audiences.” Swedish Foundation for Children without Parental Care
