Level 1 Diploma in Electrical Installation © 2014 City and Guilds of London Institute. All rights reserved. 2 of 7 Electrical materials and components Flex Flexible cables are those in which the conductor is multi-stranded with very fine wire. This makes the cable very flexible, enabling it to absorb vibration and movement. There are many types of flexible cable: Two- and three-core PVC flex (used for lighting pendants and fixed equipment) High-temperature flex (used for heating equipment such as immersion heaters) External, or arctic, flex (used on building sites etc)

Bi-pin holders used in some fittings are usually pre-wired. The ceiling rose, flex and lampholder combination are known as a pendant.
