DID YOU KNOW? 75% of the world does not speak English at all. 94% of the world does NOT speak English as their first language. Languages improve the quality of your life and your understanding of how other people live and think. You can travel more and meet new people. You could earn more in your job one day! We are preparing our children to work in a global economy where the more skilled one is the more likely one is to succeed!
HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED IN GCSE LANGUAGES information about languages basic explanation of expectations of speaking test ways of supporting your child with their revision
GCSE LANGUAGES The part of the exam pupils fear most is the speaking test. They must do the following: 1.A role-play prepared in the 10 mins before the exam 2.A presentation which they have all already prepared 3.Questions on the presentation (for the mocks IF they have prepared these they must learn them) 4.Conversation topic questions (the SPEAKING BOOKLET) PRESENTATION (AND QNS ON PRESENTATION) = 12 MARKS WORTH 4 MARKS AT FOUNDATION OR 8 MARKS AT HIGHER CONVERSATION = 20 MARKS SO OUR FOCUS IS ALWAYS THE PRESENTATION & CONVERSATION
HOW CAN YOU HELP? THE PRESENTATION – 12 MARKS Ensure they are trying different ways of committing it to memory - Copying it out writing only 1 st letter of each word Listen to them perform the presentation- slow but sure… Listening to and repeating the MP3 recording their teacher will have provided of it to help with pronunciation (EG!) Getting them to record the presentation and listen to their own pronunciation
This the most challenging part! You can help them to practise by asking them the questions and if you don’t speak the language, you can always read the English at side HOW CAN YOU HELP? THE CONVERSATION – 20 MARKS
BUT EVEN WITHOUT YOU THEY CAN PRACTISE…. (With a bit of help from an MP3 player or a computer….) BY USING THE RECORDED QUESTIONS ON MP3 IN GERMAN – HOW CAN YOU HELP? THE CONVERSATION – 20 MARKS part 2
HOW OFTEN? You do not have to spend hours doing this practice – LITTLE AND OFTEN is the key…. Ideally 5-10 minutes per day on each of the presentation and the conversation
OTHER HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS They should NOT concentrate on what they already know – they feel better but it hasn’t increased their knowledge! Make sure they have a revision timetable to ensure they learn in short bursts and plan which topics they are going to learn when Each day spend the first couple of minutes revising the topic you did the day before then go onto the new one In theory the topics they prepared in Year 10 ( the ones which they did last year) should have been committed to memory they should spend time less on Those which have they prepared most recently are likely to be the weakest ones so concentrate on these first
OTHER EXAM PREP: WRITING BOOKLETS – these have been designed by us with actual past papers for them to practise – all pupils will have done some and should look back over them AND look at the help in the front of the booklet REVISION GUIDES available £2.50/£3/£3.50 – but buying one doesn’t mean they will pass they need to open them and use them!
