Hotspot Recap

Hot mantle plumes breaching the surface in the middle of a tectonic plate What are Hotspot Volcanoes? Photo: Tom Pfeiffer / The Hawaiian island chain are examples of hotspot volcanoes.

Purpose Supports in determining the direction of plate movement based on data regarding the types of features found and events that occur on the earth’s surface.

Learning Goals Label and explain features of the different earth layers. Use geologic evidence to predict and determine how plates move relative to one another. Ask questions based on a map to determine the direction of moving plates.

Google Classroom Rate what you know! The same form will be completed at the end of this lesson.

Earth Layers Foldable Follow the instructions provided on the handout. Changes: Step 2: information will be gathered through web search Step 3: Pink or other colored paper

IQWST Activity 7.1- How are plates moving?

Given the sequence of Islands that make up Hawaii, and knowing that the largest island is the youngest and most recently formed volcano, which direction is the plate moving over the hotspot? What is happening beneath the earth’s surface?

How are plates moving?

The different directions that plates move relative to one another are responsible for the formation of geologic features. Movement of plates are also responsible for volcanoes, mountains, islands, trenches, and earthquakes on Earth.

Discussion Questions How do we identify plate boundaries? What happens to existing plates as new plates are being created? How does the new plate material form?

Pack everything up. Please put markers/crayons/col ored pencils back where they belong.

Google Classroom Rate what you know! The same form will be completed at the end of this lesson.
