WWI – On the Home Front UNIT II

Supporting the War  After declaring war, Wilson created the Committee on Public Information – created propaganda to get people to support the war effort  Victory Gardens  Rationing/Conserving  Buying Bonds

Protesting the War  Many people at home did not support the war  Pacifists  war was immoral  Socialists  war was about money for capitalists, not about protecting democracy  Others  didn’t think Zimmerman note and ships sinking were enough of a reason

Restricting Rights  Shortly after declaring war – two important acts were passed  Espionage Act of 1917  Sedition Act of 1918  Both suppressed anti-British, pro-German and anti- war opinions  Over 1000 people convicted under these laws  Both placed strict limits on 1 st amendment freedoms
