Plagiarism & Citing Sources

Plagiarism  Plagiarism is the act of presenting someone else’s ideas as one’s own.  In order to avoid plagiarism, you must correctly cite sources to give credit to the author of an original work.  You must cite information from a source even if it’s paraphrased.

Citing a Book with One Author Last name, First name. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication.

Example Green, John. The Fault in Our Stars. New York: Dutton Books, Print.

Citing an Article in a Magazine Author(s). “Title of Article.” Title of Periodical Day Month Year: Pages. Medium of Publication.

Example Cooper, Sheldon. “The Pitfalls of String Theory.” Physicist Weekly 10 April 2015: 30. Web.

Citing a Scholarly Journal Author(s). “Title of Article.” Title of Journal Volume. Issue (Year): Pages. Medium of Publication.

Example Hofstadter, Leonard. “Time Travel.” Experimental Physics 4. 2 (2015): Web.

Citing an Entire Website Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version Number. Name of institution/organization affiliated with site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access.

Citing an Entire Website  If no publisher is available, use n.p.  If no date is available, use n.d.

In-Text Citations with One Author ……..text text text text text text (Author Page#).

In-Text Citations without an Author Use the first item that appears in the Works Cited entry that corresponds to the citation (author name, article name, website name, film name). ……..text text text text text text (Article Name).

Citing Images (PDFs, MP3s, JPEGs) Author’s name. Name of the Work. Date of Creation. Medium of Publication. *Use “Digital file” when the medium cannot be determined.

Citing Photograph s Artist’s name. Title of Artwork in Italics. Date of Composition. Name of Medium of the Piece. Name of the Institution that Houses the Artwork. Example: Goya, Francisco. The Family of Charles IV Oil on canvas. Museo del Prado, Madrid.
