Toward ET ? Michele Punturo INFN and EGO 1ET: EU framework

Status of ET Design study, funded by EU in FP7, concluded in 2011 – Conceptual design report (CDR) of a 3G observatory delivered to EU Focus on the Research Infrastructure: – Multi detector design, underground infrastructure, cryogenic facility 2ET: EU framework

ET Roadmap Roadmap defined and presented in the past meetings – Hypothesis: National funding focused on Advanced detectors until – ET can “survive” in this time interval using EU funds GW detection in ET observatory approval, TDR (Technical design report) completion, project funding: … 3ET: EU framework

R&D Technical design Site preparation First detection on advanced interferometers ET Conceptual design ET Observatory Funding ELiTES ET Site and infrastructures realisation ET: EU framework GraWIToN EGWII H IA

Crossing the desert Without major supporting tools, the ET project is crossing the desert – Advanced detectors are, correctly, draining all the resources of the funding agencies and real improvements aren’t expected before the GW detection But, in US people started to discuss about beyond aLIGO – “Desertification” effects are instead visible in the EU framework ET: EU framework5

ELiTES ELiTES is a FP7-IRSES project supporting the exchange of scientists from EU to Japan, focused on ET and KAGRA (Cryogenics, suspensions, coatings, infrastructures) – 01/03/ /02/2016 – Although ELiTES is giving relevant boost to the EU- Japan collaboration (see Kazuhiro Yamamoto talk, today), the effective EU scientists engagement is below the promised level (especially in 2014) – This generate some doubt for the future beyond ELiTES 6ET: EU framework

ELiTES, the future? A RISE call has been opened by EU RISE is an evolution of the IRSES (ELiTES) tool – Larger financial support But, is there an (effective) interest? How to justify the ELiTES underperforming? 7ET: EU framework

EGWII EGWII proposal, for a integration of GW research infrastructures (AdVirgo and GEO) failed – Need to improve an eventual new proposal – A new call could be opened in 2016 ET: EU framework8

GraWIToN GraWIToN is a an Initial Training Network, involving Universities, Research institutions and industries focused on GW – Optics – Laser – Simulation – Data Analysis (almost) 13 PhD students have been recruited and a network of schools, secondments and research activities is under realization – The first network school will be organized, at EGO, the 20/04/ /05/2015, with elements of all the above subject, plus science communication and outreaching (by scientific journalists), Digital Signal processing, … – School organized in collaboration with VESF, Italian Society of GR and Gravitation (SIGRAV), INFN … – The school is open to all the interested PhD students. Advertising 9ET: EU framework

ESFRI ESFRI roadmap is under revision now – Deadline for submission the request form: 31/03/2015 – Fully TOP-DOWN approach: GW are currently out of the revision – Other 2 windows available: 2018 and 2020 ET: EU framework10 European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures

Questions We need to discuss the ET strategy – To foresee a longer time-line? – To define intermediate steps (deep upgrade of the advanced detectors) developing technology usable in ET? – Is needed an ET collaboration in this scenario? ET: EU framework11
