Skyline Pigeon Written by Bernie Taupin Performed by Elton John

Excerpt from Skyline Pigeon I want to hear the pealing bells Of distant churches sing But most of all please free me From this aching metal ring And open out this cage towards the sun

Theme The theme of this poem is that you sometimes need to release yourself or one who you love, thus allowing him to make something great of life.

Analysis Right before this excerpt, Taupin writes about how this “Skyline Pigeon” dreams of being freed and makes these dreams pop through imagery such as “I want to hear the pealing bells of distant churches sing.” Taupin wrote this song as a metaphor for a boy who wishes to be freed from his home and make something out of himself. “Most of all please free me from this aching metal ring, and open out this cage toward the sun.

interesting facts about Bernie Taupin Bernie Taupin is best known for his long collaboration with Elton John, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Fact 2 Bernie Taupin wrote arguably his most famous and most loved song, “Your Song”, in eleven minutes while eating breakfast with Elton John.

Fact 3 Taupin didn’t only write for Elton, he wrote for other bands, most notably Jefferson Starship’s “We Built This City”

Fact 4 Bernie rewrote Candle in the Wind, originally a celebration of Marilyn Monroe, for the 1997 funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales and was performed by Elton John during her funeral. This song would sell 33,000,000 copies.

Fact 5 Elton John on Bernie Taupin: "Without Bernie, basically, there wouldn’t have been an Elton John. I mean, without that stroke of good fortune and kismet as it were, Elton John probably wouldn’t have happened. I’m just a purveyor of Bernie’s feelings, Bernie’s thoughts.
