Written Calculations

Due to changes in our assessment procedures, we have made a few alteration to our calculations policy.

For a more able child to reach level 3 at Key Stage One now, they need to be introduced to some concepts at an earlier age.

In Year 2, the majority of children will use number lines to add by counting on.

Number Lines Partition =

Children who are confident with this method may go on to be taught column addition.

Add units Add tens 1

I Year 3 all children who are ready are taught column addition with carrying. This is continued through the juniors and later includes addition of decimals.

In Year 2 the majority of children will use number lines for subtraction. They will use a ‘counting on’ approach.

Number Lines = 9

Children who are confident with the number line method will be introduced to column subtraction in Year 2.

Column Subtraction - This moves onto decomposition when the children are ready.

Decomposition - As you can see, the children need to have an understanding of place value before moving on to this. The teacher may use practical apparatus to demonstrate how the ‘exchanging’ works. 4

In Year 3 all children who are ready will be taught the column method. This method continues to be taught throughout the juniors.

Times Tables

In Year 1 the most able children may begin to learn their 10x tables.

By Year 2 all children will be learning their 10x tables. When they reach a secure level 2 they will also be introduced to the 2x and 5x tables.

By the end of Year 4, the average child should be secure in the 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x and 10x tables.

By early Year 6, the average child should be secure in all of the times tables up to 12x.

Written multiplication methods

Year 3

In Year 3 the children will be introduced to an extended column method for multiplying TU x U. 2 3 X

Year 4

In Year 4 this will progress to the standard written method. 2 6 x

Year 5 & 6

In Year 5 the children are introduced to Long Multiplication. This is continued in Year 6.

28 x Long Multiplication Multiply U x U Multiply U x T Multiply T x U Multiply T x T

Children working below level 3 in Maths learn about division through a variety of informal written methods. When a child reaches a secure level 3 they will be introduced to the standard short division method.

Short Division 92 ÷

Year 6

In Year 6 the children are taught the long division method enabling them to divide more easily by TU numbers.

Long Division 2 ÷ (20 x 36) (2 x 36) (5 x 36) -

For the children to be able to successfully grasp multiplication and division methods, it is essential that they have a good knowledge of times tables facts.

Thank you for listening.
