6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 15 January 15 th, 2016 Science Next Week Science Weekly Review This week students discovered the Ancient civilizations of the Americas. The Olmec’s and the Mayans were the first known settlers of Middle America, also called Mesoamerica, as early as 1500 B.C. or prior. The word Olmec means “rubber people” because they invented rubber and found so many uses for it. They were also first to invent a game using a large rubber ball on a court. The Mayas gave us the symbol for zero. Important Students should no longer be carrying their bag packs from class to class. There will be another Middle School Color War January 22 nd, wear your green shirt! Mummy Project is due January 27 th. The 2 nd marking period ends on January 29 th. 1/19 The students will hand in their final copies of the essays. They will review vocabulary by writing the new words that they have been using in Weather and Water unit 2. 1/20 The students will complete a KWL on the properties of air. 1/21 The students will experiment with syringes to show that there is air inside the syringe. They will be placing items into the syringe to show that when the plunger is pushed the air creates pressure. 1/22 The students will experiment with balloons to show that air has mass. 1/11 The students reviewed Earth’s atmospheric, examined what would happen to the Earth’s atmosphere if the composition of the air changed, and completed a close read of Our Changing Atmosphere. 1/12 The students completed a close read of Is Earth Getting Warmer. 1/13 The students answered questions on Is Earth Getting Warmer. The students were given a writing project in which they used the 9 Step Writing Process to explain what might happen if the levels of certain gases in the atmosphere change and why they feel we need to pay attention to the changing levels of gases in our atmosphere. 1/14 The students completed a rough draft of the essay. 1/15 The students began writing their final drafts of the essays. Social Studies 1/18/16 No school 1/19/16 In class test review 1/20/16 Chapter 4 test 1/21-22/16 Introduction to Asia’s Classical Age *** The completed mummy project is due on 1/27/16. Student Supplies Students are starting to get low on pencils, glue, and erasers. The 6 th grade team would appreciate if these items could be replenished. Thanks!

6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Math with Ms. York Week in Review This week students have used the concept of absolute value and its notation to show a number’s distance from zero on the number line being able to recognize that opposite numbers have the same absolute value (6.NS.C.7c). In real-world scenarios students have also been able to interpret absolute value as a magnitude for a positive or negative quantity. By applying their understanding of order and absolute value to determine that, for instance, a checking account balance that is less than -25 dollars represents a debt of more than $25 (6.NS.C.7d). To wrap up the week students took a day to review for their Mid Module 3 Test and in fact took the test on Friday January 15 th.
