To round decimals we need to understand two key points: 1. Decimal Place Value 2. Strength of Numbers

Decimal Place Value NumberWhole #TenthsHundredthsThousandth s

Strength of Numbers Weak Numbers Keep the # in front of it, the same Strong Numbers Change the # in front of it, increase by 1/go up 1

Rounding Decimals When rounding decimals, we use the same method as rounding whole numbers Round to the nearest hundreds: 6588 Round to the nearest hundredths: 6.588

Rounding Decimals Zeros in the ENDING decimal places can be “thrown out” **different from rounding whole #s. When rounding whole #s  keep the zeros on the end Example: Round to the nearest tenth:

Rounding Decimals Example: Round to the nearest hundredth: Example: Round to the nearest hundred:

Rounding Decimals Example: Round to the nearest WHOLE #: *the nearest whole # is the one’s place value! 38.62

Rounding Decimals Practice: a) Round to the nearest ten thousandth: b) Round to the nearest hundred: c) Round to the nearest whole number:
