How to Write Good Essays

 An introduction should go from general to specific. It should start with a hook and end with a thesis.  A HOOK grabs the reader’s attention: Ask an intriguing question Use a startling statistic Describe something in detail Use a personal story

 At the end of the Introduction, you should have a thesis statement It outlines the main points of the paper It should be parallel It should be one sentence long Example: Nursing is a great profession because of the flexible hours, the generous pay, and the chance to help others.

 Each one should start with a topic sentence.  Each topic sentence should have a key word which correlates with the thesis statement.  Example: One of the biggest benefits of being a nurse is the flexible work schedule.  In most topic sentences, you should have transitions.  Transitions connect the last idea to the next one.  Example: Another reason many people choose nursing as a career is because of the pay.

 A Conclusion should move from specific to general.  Restate the main ideas from your thesis statement but in a new way.  End leaving your reader thinking.

 Avoid “you”  Paragraphs should be 8-10 sentences.  Always be as specific as possible.  Be sure to elaborate and explain in detail within paragraphs.  Paragraphs should only focus on ONE MAIN IDEA. Don’t jump around.
