High school student STEMbassadors carry forward the mission of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) to schools in the region Adult STEMbassador Liaisons build relationships with local schools to foster participation Student STEMbassadors in STEM activities at the neighborhood school Elementary & middle school students in STEM outreach events at TJHSST (or elsewhere) 7

STEP 2: Meet with STEM Contact Find STEM contact info. on portal If contact does not exist, use letter to reach principal Once you establish STEM contact meeting, use recommended talking points to brainstorm outreach ideas 23

Advice for Scheduling Evening or weekend events At target school At TJ For non-FCPS schools, use FCPS teacher workdays Recruit volunteers from pyramid high school Recruit other parents (transport, monitor) Carpool with other nearby schools 24

STEP 3: Volunteer Network Develop your own network of student contacts (e.g. via your child or neighborhood) The school cannot release information about students, although you can look in the PTSA directory. 25 TJ student STEMbassadors

STEP 4: Volunteer Recruitment When STEM contact sends a student volunteer request Approach your student network Send request for student Intranet posting Send request for zip code blast If responses still inadequate, contact your pyramid HS Ask us to contact your pyramid HS Exchange Service Opportunity ​ Liaison should notify their elementary school of TJ outreach events e.g., Techstravaganza 26

STEP 5: Records Access service activity log on portal to keep track of TJ student involvement Note when local school students attend TJ events  We will be updating the website so the adult liaisons will be able to log in to post event summaries and pictures to share 27

8 th Period Guidance 1.Apply for FCPS badge from 8 th period office 2.Schedule activity dates with 8 th period office 3.Arrange for student transportation from TJ to the school & coordinate “hand off” of students to the neighborhood school FCPS rep. 4.Assure that students have a way to get home after the activity concludes & wait until all student volunteers have departed. 29
