The Unknown Scout William D. Boyce, the Chicago publisher, had lost himself in the heart of a London fog. A boy on the street, came up and saluted Mr. Boyce and said, "May I be of service to you?" Mr. Boyce said, "If you can show me how to find this address it will be a real service." This lad very smartly saluted and said, "Sir, follow me" and brought him to the place that Mr. Boyce desired. Then Mr. Boyce pulled his coin purse out and offered the boy a shilling. The boy promptly saluted and said, "Sir, I am a Scout. Scouts do not accept tips for courtesies. The man said, "What did you say?"

Scouting brought to America because of an act of Service The Scout repeated, and then added, "Don't you know what the Scouts are?" He said, "No, I don't, but I would like to know." The boy said, "Follow me." Boyce agreed to do so after his errand and so this lad who was waiting for him outside, took him to the office of Sir Robert Baden-Powell, whence Boyce brought back to America a trunk-load of printed matter. He went to Washington and with his good friend Mr. Livingstone incorporated the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, The "unknown Scout" who helped him in the fog was never heard from again, but he will never be forgotten. His Good Turn is what brought Scouting to our country and exemplifies a Scout’s promise “…to do my best…to help other people at all times…”.

Scouting includes Service in advancement requirements Tenderfoot – one hour Second Class – two hours First Class – three hours Star – six hours Life – six hours (3 are conservation-related) Eagle - plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school, or your community.

Community Service – An Important Part of Scouting Making community service a part of your Unit’s overall program is a true win-win for all involved. The community benefits as organizations or individuals receive valuable help. It gives your Unit’s program calendar some additional structure and content. And it teaches your youth some valuable lifelong lessons about being involved in their community and the benefit that can be provided by volunteerism.

Service Program Goals Increase the amount of community service provided by Scouting units Support council-wide service projects. SERV Award Scouting Excellence - Recognizing Volunteerism Annual Program – A Scout, Explorer, Venturer or adult can earn a pin based on their hours of service in each calendar year (12/1 – 11/30). Bronze-8 hours/Silver-12 hours/Gold-20 hours (Cub Scouts: Bronze-4 hours/Silver-6 hours/Gold-10 hours ) Service must be of a purely community nature where other recognition or awards are not offered, including rank and civic awards. Service hours required by schools, places of worship, and service organizations (Interact, Key Club, etc.) should not be applied to the SERV award. 14
