Soviets in Afghanistan  9 year conflict ( ) Civil war continued even after Soviet withdrawl Compared to U.S. involvement in Vietnam

Soviets in Afghanistan cont.  USSR supported Marxist government (communism)  U.S. & other Muslim nations supported resistance mujahideen (non-communism)

Moscow Olympic Boycott-1980  Soviet invasion of Afghanistan  caused U.S. president Carter to issue an ultimatum to USSR If not out of Afghanistan by Feb. 1, 1980 => U.S. would boycott Olympics  Soviets did not comply (lasted for 9 yrs)  65 other countries boycotted Summer games in Moscow

Boycott cont.  U.S. athletes who attempted to attend were threatened to lose their CITIZENSHIP!

Soviets dominate Olympics  Soviets earned nearly twice as many medals as the 2 nd place medal earner

Lake Placid Olympic Games-1980  Highlight of the games: 3 rd place hockey match  Major rivalry due to Cold War Soviets were heavy favorites ○ Had won every ice hockey medal since 1964 U.S. team led by Herb Brooks (Minnesotan) ○ Young players with promise ○ PATRIOTISM!
