Presentation transcript:

 Process by which molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.  Move from crowded to non-crowded

 The diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane

 Photosynthesis  Photosynthesis- A process by which plants convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into food energy (sugar), oxygen and water.  Chloroplast  Chloroplast- An elongated cell organelle containing chlorophyll where photosynthesis takes place.  Chlorophyll  Chlorophyll- A green molecule which uses light energy from sunlight to change water and carbon dioxide gas into sugar and oxygen

H 2 O + CO 2 + light  O 2 + C 6 H 12 O 6 Water+ Carbon + sun  Oxygen + glucose Dioxide(sugar)

Chlorophyll is the green pigment inside the chloroplasts of plant cells that makes leaves green!

CO 2

Sugar + O 2 O2O2O2O2

 Respiration  Respiration- The process by which the chemical energy of "food" molecules is released and changed into ATP.  Mitochondria  Mitochondria- Rod-shaped organelles with a double membrane which converts the energy stored in glucose into ATP for the cell.

O 2 + C 6 H 12 O 6  H CO 2 + ATP Do you notice something about this equation? Oxygen + glucose  water + carbon + energy (sugar)dioxide

 Animals use:  Sugar (from producers/plants)  Oxygen (from producers/plants)  Plants use:  Carbon dioxide (from animals)

O2O2 O2O2 O2O2 O2O2 O2O2

Photosynthesis Equation: light H 2 O + CO 2 + light  O 2 + glucose Respiration Equation: ATP O 2 + glucose  H 2 O + CO 2 + ATP They are opposites of each other!
