First, let’s set up your foldable for today. 1. Fold your blank paper in half hamburger-style. Unfold the paper and draw a line along your fold line. 2. Fold your paper in half hot dog-style. Unfold the paper. Fold the two long edges in to meet in the middle.

3. CAREFULLY cut the middle of the long doors.

4. Write “Photosynthesis” on the left doors of your foldable.

3. CAREFULLY cut the middle of the long doors. 4. Write “Photosynthesis” on the left doors of your foldable. 5. Write “Cellular Respiration” on the right doors of your foldable.

Now, for a few notes…

Cellular Energy

Energy :the ability to do work

Most energy comes from the sun in the form of light.

All energy leaves the Earth in the form of heat.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the chemical that cells use to store and release energy. The energy in ATP is stored in the bonds between the elements. What biomolecule does ATP look like?

II. Photosynthesis

To perform photosynthesis, plants need: 1. sunlight (energy source) 2. water 3. carbon dioxide These are called the reactants.

After photosynthesis, the plant has produced: 1.Glucose (molecule that the plant uses to produce energy) 2.Oxygen (given off through the leaves) These are called the products.

SUNLIGHT The equation of photosynthesis is: 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + sunlight  C 6 H O 2 carbon dioxide + water + energy  glucose + oxygen

PHOTOSYNTHESIS: the process in which light energy is converted to chemical energy (food) *occurs in chloroplasts of cells (on your foldable)

Copy the equation onto your foldable – be sure to label the REACTANTS and PRODUCTS! 6 CO H 2 O + energy  C 6 H O 2 (Sunlight) (Glucose) (Oxygen) (Glucose) (Oxygen) (Carbon Dioxide) (Water)

Photosynthesis occurs in an organelle in the leaves. Chloroplasts: organelle where photosynthesis takes place Chlorophyll: pigment in chloroplasts, makes plants green

Remember that photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts…draw this diagram on your foldable! sunlight carbon dioxide water glucose oxygen CHLOROPLAST

In one or two sentences, summarize the process of photosynthesis. & write out the equation in words

Mix-Freeze-Group I am the vascular tissue that transports nutrients through the plant. I am the structure around the stomata that allows gases to enter and exit the leaf. I am the process during which water is lost through the leaves. I am the vascular tissue that transports water throughout the plant. Phloem Xylem Guard CellTranspiration

Talk to your partner: Where do plants take in carbon dioxide? Where do plants take in water?

III. Cellular Respiration

Cellular respiration: the process that releases energy by breaking down glucose.

Cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondria of plant and animal cells. Cellular respiration makes 36 ATP molecules The remaining energy is lost as heat. Mitochondria

Talk to you partner: If humans do not make our own food in photosynthesis, how do we get nutrients to perform cellular respiration?

The formula for cellular respiration is: 6O 2 + C 6 H 12 O 6  6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + Energy oxygen + glucose  carbon dioxide + water + ATP Cellular respiration requires oxygen and glucose and gives off carbon dioxide, water, and energy.

CELLULAR RESPIRATION: the process in which glucose (food) is broken down and converted to energy for cell functions (ATP) *occurs in mitochondria of cells (on your foldable) Using glucose for energy is called Cellular Respiration! *Glucose = carbohydrate = quick energy

Cellular respiration is a CHEMICAL REACTION, which means that it has a CHEMICAL EQUATION. The equation for cellular respiration is: Copy the equation onto your foldable – be sure to label the REACTANTS and PRODUCTS! 6 O 2 + C 6 H 12 O 6  6 CO H 2 O + Energy (ATP)(glucose)

Mitochondria Remember that cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondria…draw this diagram on your foldable! ATP carbon dioxide water oxygen glucose (HEAT) Mitochondria

In one or two sentences, summarize the process of cellular respiration. & write out the equation in words

Close your foldable and fold it in half. Glue one side to your journal page.

On the exposed side, draw a picture to illustrate the cycle of photosynthesis & cellular respiration.
