Mr. King J110

 1294 King Phillip IV taxes church officials  The pope tells his clergy to not pay the taxes  The king arrests Pope Boniface VIII; his replacement leaves the Vatican to live in France  This weakens the church’s power

 Wycliffe wanted to change the church  He said the Bible, not the church, should be the authority over Christians  He translates the Latin Bible into English  His followers are called Poor Preachers; they are only interested in religion, not money

 Huss argues the church’s clergy were too worldly and they should be removed  Hearing this, political leaders fear a rebellion  The church charges Huss a heretic; he is later arrested and then…

 Luther vowed that he would become a monk if he survived a storm in 1505  Luther teaches religion at the University of Wittenberg  He wonders how a person can save their soul  He argues that salvation is guaranteed through faith alone

 Luther explained that fasting, prayer, and religious ceremonies did not guarantee salvation  This goes against the Catholic Church  In 1517 Pope Leo X begins to sell indulgences which promises a person will not be punished after death for sins

 Kings and Queens = 25 gulden  High counts/member of clergy = 10 gulden  Low counts/member of clergy = 6 gulden  Merchants/townspeople = 3 gulden  Artisans = 1 gulden  Others =.5 gulden 1 gulden = 100 cents

 Pope Leo X continues to sell indulgences to pay for St. Peter’s Church  People buy indulgences for dead loved ones  1517 John Tetzel sells indulgences to free a person’s soul from purgatory and guarantee salvation  Luther writes the 95 Theses which criticizes the selling of indulgences, the pope, and the Catholic Church  The church loses money

 “Here I stand. I cannot do otherwise.”  Pope Leo X excommunicated Luther and signs the Edict of Worms allowing anyone to kill Luther  Luther wanted 3 reforms: only faith in Jesus would save a person, religious truth came from the Bible, and the clergy was not necessary to explain the Bible

 Luther translates the Bible into German  His church is called the Lutheran Church  The Lutheran Church was different from the Catholic Church in many ways  People who oppose the Catholic Church are called Protestants

 Martin Luther was openly anti-Semitic  He wrote: On the Jews and Their Lies, 1543  He hoped Jews would convert to Christianity  Historians believe his ideas influenced Hitler and the Nazi party
