Regrouping to Subtract Mixed Numbers

EX ⅜ 4 - 2⅜ 1. Change the problem from sideways to up and down. 2. Look to see if the problem can be done the way it is. 3. If it cannot be done the way it is, you have to borrow. EX ⅜ Cross out the whole number and reduce it by one. 5. Since you borrowed “1” from the whole number, write it as a fraction meaning “1” but using the denominator you need.

EX ⅜ 1 ⅝ 6. Subtract the fractions. Then subtract the whole numbers. 3 8 Make sure your answer is in simplest form.

5⅙ - 2⅔ 5⅙ - 2⅔ 2. Look to see if the problem can be done the way it is. 3. If it cannot be done the way it is, you have to borrow. 5⅙ + = -2⅔ = 4. Cross out the whole number and reduce it by one Since you borrowed “1” from the whole number, make it a fraction meaning “1” but using the denominator you need. Add it to the fraction you already have Find the LCD for the 2 fractions in the problem and make equivalent fractions. 4 6

5⅙ + = -2⅔ = Subtract the fractions. Then subtract the whole numbers. Make sure your answer is in simplest form ½
