Cherokee Chief Bowles Friend of Sam Houston. President Houston brought Bowles in to be a liason (a go between person) between the Cherokee Indians and the people & govt of Texas. Chief Bowles worked with Houston to keep the Cherokees on their land in TX. Pres. Lamar disliked the Indians and told Bowles to take the Cherokees and leave TX. Bowles refused. Lamar sent the militia down to forcibly remove the Cherokees and a battle ensued- Battle of the Neches. The end result of that Battle was the death of 100+ Cherokees to include Chief Bowles and the Cherokees left to OK.

Sam Houston Pres & st & 3 rd President of the Republic of TX. Worked on balancing the budget in first term and lowering the debt in second term. Wanted to annex TX to the U.S. Also worked to keep peace between the Indians and the people of TX. Also worked to keep the Indians on their land (worked with Chief Bowles).

Mirabeau Lamar nd President of the Republic of TX Was against many of Houston’s policies to include keeping the Cherokees in TX & annexing TX. Ordered the Cherokee’s out and when they refused Lamar sent the militia down to force them out. A battle ensued (Battle of the Neches). In this battle over 100 Cherokees died to include Chief Bowles. His battles with the Cherokees cost him a great deal of money which raised the debt for TX (Houston worked to lower this debt in his second term.

Edwin Moore Commodore in the U.S. Navy. Helped protect the Mex. Ports of the Yucatan from the rebels. Retired when Houston disbanded the Navy (was disbanded due to lack of funds).

Jose Navarro Only native Texan delegate at the Constitutional Convention of 1836 (other delegates were form outside of TX & had moved to TX). Supported, worked for, & was a voice for the Tejanos. Was in Congress of TX. Was from San Antonio.

Anson Jones th & final President of the Republic of TX. Annexed TX to the U.S. Jones was against annexing TX & worked with Mexico to draft a document that Mexico would formally recognize TX as being an independent nation. Jones presented both the annexation & Independence proposal to TX Congress for a vote. TX did vote for annexation & was upset with Jones for delaying the vote (delayed vote to wait for proposal from Mexico).
