MyPlate.gov On June 2, 2011, USDA announced the replacement of MyPyramid with MyPlate Key focus areas of the new food icon –Balancing Calories Enjoy your food, but eat less. Avoid oversized portions. –Foods to Increase Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. Make at least half your grains whole grains. Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk. –Foods to Reduce Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals ― and choose the foods with lower numbers. Drink water instead of sugary drinks.

MyPlate Complementary and synergistic consumer messages between MyPlate and NuVal ® Scores: –Both the MyPlate food icon and the NuVal System are based in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and are intended to make the guidelines actionable by consumers. –The MyPlate food icon focuses on overall guidance for dietary patterns; the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System takes this guidance to the next level, empowering consumers to make more nutritious food choices in their daily lives. –MyPlate provides guidance around what food groups are needed in what portions. The NuVal System builds on this focus by helping consumers choose the most nutrient-dense foods in each category, gaining the most nutrition benefit for the calories consumed. –Fruits and vegetables are designed to fill half of MyPlate, as a constant reminder to consumers of the key role these foods play in health. The NuVal Nutritional Scoring System supports this message as vegetables and fruits are the highest scoring food category.

MyPlate The NuVal ® System makes the MyPlate recommendations actionable. MyPlate Recommendation: Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
