Making the Transition from Early Years to Key Stage One - Foundation Stage to Key Stage One of the National Curriculum. - many opportunities to learn through play. - to revisit the Early Learning Goals from Reception.

At the start of the day … KS2 playground. Whistle at 8.50 am. Lining up and gaining independence. Please be in the line!

At the end of the day … Key Stage 2 exit – by the stairs Staying with me. Saying goodbye. Going to the office.

What does your child need to have? Named water bottle – extra to the one in a lunchbox. No squash please in class. Named uniform. Named P.E. kit – school P.E. top, navy blue shorts, plimsolls. Named book-bag. Only one key-ring attached please! Named glue-stick. Not the coloured glue sticks please.

Please do not let your child bring … Any toys. (We will try to have a ‘Show and Tell’ day once a term). A pencil-case. Jewellery – except as allowed.

Reading Books / Reading Records 10 minutes. Quiet, calm atmosphere. Reading records. The children will continue to read to a Reading Partner from Year 4, as well as to myself, the Teaching Assistants and adult helpers.

Sharing a book with your child – some ideas. Predict the story from the cover. Discuss the pictures. Read the book together, and then allow your child to read it to you. Change the ending. Relate to the child’s own experience. Look for rhyming words. Discuss what could have happened before the story began.

Please read and enjoy a range of books Read a book from home. School library. Town library.

Spelling Homework Use both phonic ability and memory to spell more challenging words. Some words are easy to learn (am, it, is, went) as they can be ‘sounded out’. Certain words (the, was, you) simply need to be memorised and learned by rote.

How do the spellings work? Weekly spelling tests. Set of words. Set of words stuck into the front of their book. Spelling test will be stuck into the back.

How to help? Practise on a regular basis. Ask your child to look at the word, then cover it, write the word, check the spelling and rewrite if necessary. Use scrap pieces of paper at home. Point out the pattern in the word, if there is one. i.e. ai train Spain gain

Secret to Success? The secret of success is frequent revision of spellings over a period of time rather than one long session.

Which days? The Spellings sent home on Wednesdays. Returned on the following Monday. Spelling test will take place on Mondays.

Maths Homework Weekly piece of maths homework. Usually relate to work in class. Might be a practical piece. Might be My Maths (use of computer).

Do I help? Give guidance. Encourage thinking which method / resources to use. Write a small comment, particularly if your child had any problems carrying out the activity.

The details … Sent home Friday. Returned on Wednesday. Pencil, not pen. Basic resources - dice, counters, selection of small value coins, scissors, glue-stick, colouring pencils …..

Visiting the School Library Continues in Year One on a Tuesday. Library books in their book bag on a Tuesday. I will let you know if the day changes!

P.E. On a Monday and Thursday with Mr. Seuke. this term. Kit is in school. Named kit. Kit will go home at the end of each half term to be washed etc. Please also take this opportunity to check plimsolls still fit, especially before the start of the summer term.

Please note …. Any earrings are to be removed on Mondays and Thursdays. Children wearing earrings on those days will not be allowed to do P.E. If children get their ears pierced, please note that they will not be allowed to do P.E. for the following 6 weeks.
