Who are our users and how do they access information?

Baby Boomers & Generation X Baby boomer is a term used to describe a person born between 1946 and av,. now 55 (Bill Gates b1955, Ossie Osbourne b1948) Generation X is term used to describe generations in many countries around the world born from 1964 to around Wikipedia

Generation Y The term Generation Y refers to a specific cohort of individuals born from (although this is disputed by demographers and varies across countries). In their recent book, Reynol Junco and Jeanna Mastrodicasa (2007) found that in a survey of 7,705 college students in the US: –97% own a computer –94% own a cell phone –76% use Instant Messaging. –15% of IM users are logged on 24 hours a day/7 days a week –34% use websites as their primary source of news –28% own a blog and 44% read blogs –49% download music using peer-to-peer file sharing –75% of college students have a Facebook account [22]Facebook[22] –60% own some type of portable music and/or video device such as an iPod.iPod It has been said that what characterises Gen Y is I WANT IT NOW! Wikipedia

Generation Z Generation Z is the generation that follows Generation Y, which followed Generation X. The term has been used to refer to today's pre-teens (born after 1996), but is used more often to refer to people born after the year Both refer to "the first generation to be born into a digital world“ Wikipedia

How can we respond to the changes?

Whither, or Wither, Paper? See handout: Reflections on change, AGCAS 2007, p140

A paradigm shift? Rethinking the traditional ‘information room’ model Providing resources online Continuing to provide selected hard copy? Integrating online and physical collections Managing online resources

How are electronic resources different from physical resources? Physical - fixed in one place Physical - requires duplication, or at least signposting to cope, with multiple sites Electronic – can be accessed anywhere Electronic – allows you to create bespoke ‘sub- collections’ easily Electronic – accessible 24/7 Physical allows us to guide users, whereas they are on their own

Range of Media One-to-one Podcasts Live text chat / video chat Social bookmarking Paper-based Social networking Website Streaming video Online fairs

So… The information revolution has caused us review the traditional ways of presenting careers information and how ICT can provide an alternative platform. But how can we manage an electronic collection?
