Why Use Study Techniques? Enhances Active Learning. Eases Memorization. Reduces Overall Workload.

Study Skills Are Universal Basic methods can be applied to most any discipline. Some methods work better than others in certain situations.

PQRST Method Preview, Question, Read, Summarize & Test. A process useful in most situations. A large degree of active learning is involved.

Preview Dates & Organization Skim the source material to get an idea about the learning objectives: Do you need any other materials?

Question Probably the most important step in active learning. Ask yourself: What am I supposed to learn from this?

Read Read/Review the material. Keep in mind the learning objectives you identified.

Summarize Create summaries of the important information. Verbal, Written, Visual.

Test Create a way to review the material. Can be as simple as cover & recite. Can be as involved as discussing the concepts with others.

Other Techniques & Cautions Flash Cards / Memory Prompts(Promotes Memorization, not necessarily learning) Acronyms and Mnemonics (Requires Repetition)

Other Techniques Cont’d Active Listening. (Works Really Well in Lectures, Reduces Time Needed For Review) Periodic Review (Takes Much More Time)
