GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION IMPORTANT INFORMATION The Republic of Maldives is an island country in the Indian Ocean. It has 1199 island that are clustered into 26 major atolls. An atoll is a ring –shaped coral reef or a string of closely spaced island. The natural coral reef of Maldives surrounded by lagoons make each island stand out as a pearl in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives stand at eighth position amongst the smallest countries in the world with an area of 300 square kilometers only. Natural Calamities in Island. The Maldives have held a cabinet meeting to highlight the bad effects of the global warming in the world. Calamities: Floods, Tsunami, cyclone and earthquakes as well as rising sea level are called natural calamities. Reason: The main reasons for this calamities in the world specially in Maldives are global warming caused by excessive carbon dioxide around the earth. Results: The dry part of the Maldives have been washed away by Tsunami in recent years and killed many lives.
