DO NOW: HOW WILL YOU SHOW YOUR GRATITUDE TO JESUS THIS WEEK? Chapter 23 “Jesus, Redeemer & Savior”
Chapter 23 ~ lesson 1 Jesus Gave us a New Covenant Jesus’ preaching created fear with the authorities in Jerusalem. Jesus and his disciples traveled to Jerusalem for Passover. The Passover meal was a reminder to the Jews of the Exodus. At the Passover meal Jesus told his disciples to take bread and wine as a remembrance of his body and blood. They were to do this in his memory. This meal on the night before he died is called the Last Supper. After the meal, Jesus went to the garden of Gethsemane to pray to his Father. He knew the next day would be a day of suffering.

Chapter 23 ~ lesson 1 Jesus Gave His Life For Us Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, entered the garden with a Temple guard and gave Jesus over for 30 pieces of silver. The guards took Jesus to Caiaphas, the high priest who accused Jesus of blasphemy. Jesus went before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. Judas realized what he had done to Jesus, but it was too late to do anything. He was found guilty of blasphemy – calling God his father. He was whipped and crucified between two criminals. When Jesus took his last breath, the temple shook, the veil in the sanctuary was torn in two.
Chapter 23 ~ lesson 1
When Jesus died, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and other disciples were there. Joseph of Arimathea, a follower of Jesus, took Jesus’ body and placed it in his tomb. It was Good Friday, the day before the Jewish Sabbath. By Jesus’ death and Resurrection we received salvation and were given hope of new life. It is believed that the Last Supper was eaten in a room in the Chapel of the Cenacle. Cenacle means “dining room.”
Chapter 23 ~ lesson 1 Jesus Christ Rose From the Dead Jesus rose from the dead on the third day. This mystery is called the Resurrection. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went to the tomb with spices to anoint him. When they arrived, the stone was moved and Jesus was gone. Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene. She went to Jesus’ friends and told them Jesus was alive, but they did not believe her. No one believed until Jesus appeared to them all.
Chapter 23 ~ lesson 1 Jesus Appeared to His Disciples Jesus appeared to his disciples to strengthen them and to make sure they believed in all that he had done for humanity. Jesus appeared to them in a locked room. He showed his disciples his side and his hands. He breathed on them and said, ” Receive the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit that Jesus breathed on his Apostles, is the same Holy Spirit that gives us life. One of the Apostles Thomas was not there when Jesus Appeared. He did not believe until Jesus appeared and showed him his wounds. Thomas believed because he saw. What does, “Blessed are those who believe and have not seen?” mean.
