Jesus & The Samaritan Woman I.The Departure

John 1:33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

Jesus & The Samaritan Woman I.The Departure II.The Location

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Jesus & The Samaritan Woman I.The Departure II.The Location III.The Encounter A.The Subject of Providence

Luke 7:36-39 One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment.

Luke 7: Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.”

Luke 7:40-50 And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.”

Luke 7: Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.”

Luke 7: And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50 And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

It is better to burn the Law than give it to a woman.

Tasker The Samaritan woman is a timeless figure – not only a typical Samaritan but a typical human being. As she converses with Jesus, it becomes clear that like most men and women she is almost exclusively concerned with the provision of what will satisfy her physical needs, particularly thirst- quenching water which can often be obtained only by the expenditure of much time and energy.

Galatians 3:26-29 …for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

Charles Wesley Love, like death, hath all destroyed, Rendered all distinctions void; Names, and sects, and parties fall: Thou, O Christ, art all in all.

Jesus & The Samaritan Woman I.The Departure II.The Location III.The Encounter A.The Subject of Providence B.The Subject of Living Water

Verse 10  “If you knew the gift of God”  “and who it is that asks for a drink”  “you would have asked Him”

Jeremiah 2:13 …for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.

Isaiah 55:1 Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat!

Hendriksen …she is beginning to ponder the greatness of this stranger. Thus, she is being made receptive for the Gospel

Physical Water  Cannot permanently quench one’s thirst. Thirst will be a recurring experience for all men—“will be thirsty again.”  Only satisfies the body, not the soul.  Is limited in quantity. It will eventually run dry.

Living Water  Satisfies one’s thirst for all eternity— “will never be thirsty.”  Enters into the soul and becomes a source of everlasting spiritual refreshment—“will become in him a spring of water.”  Will never run dry—“welling up to eternal life.”

Jesus & The Samaritan Woman I.The Departure II.The Location III.The Encounter A.The Subject of Providence B.The Subject of Living Water C.The Subject of Sin

Piper The quickest way to the heart is through a wound.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones It is not enough to tell a man he is a sinner; rather we must prove it to him.

John 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

John 6:65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

Ephesians 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins

Ryle Till men and women are brought to feel their sinfulness and need, no real good is ever done to their soul. Till a sinner see himself as God sees him, he will continue careless…and unmoved.

Ryle Never does a soul value the gospel medicine until it feels its disease. Never does a man see any beauty in Christ as a Saviour, until he discovers that he himself is a lost and ruined sinner. Ignorance of sin is invariably attended by neglect of Christ.

Isaiah 55:1 Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat!

Horatius Bonar I heard the voice of Jesus say, ‘Behold, I freely give The living water—thirsty one, Stoop down, and drink, and live!’ I came to Jesus, and I drank Of that life-giving stream; My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, And now I live in Him.
