Metric Units The metric system uses standard units for length, mass, and capacity.  meter (m) - measures length and distance  gram (g) – measures mass  liter (L) – measures capacity, or volume

Metric Prefixes The metric system is easy to use because it is a base-ten system. This means that larger units are defined by multiplying by powers of 10. Smaller units are found by dividing by powers of 10.

Metric Prefixes KKilo (k)-means1,000 HHecto (h)-means100 DDeka (da)-means10 BBase unit1 DDeci (d)-means1/10 or 0.1 CCenti (c)-means1/100 or 0.01 MMilli (m)-means1/1000 or 0.001

How long is a meter(m)? About inches (a yard is 36 inches) 2 cocker spaniel dogs width of a front door

How long is a kilometer(km)?  1 kilometer (km) = 1,000 meters  And about the length of:  0.6 of a mile mile km  10 football fields

What is the length of a centimeter(cm)?  1 centimeter = 1/100 or 0.01 meter  And about the same as:  the thickness of a single crayon  the width of the head of a thumbtack  the width of your pinky finger

How long is a millimeter(mm )?  1 millimeter (mm) = 1/1000 or meter  And about the same as:  the thickness of a dime  the tip of a ballpoint pen

Conversions Between Units King Henry died unexpectedly drinking - chocolate milk To convert to a smaller unit, multiply or move decimal to the right. To convert to a larger unit, divide or move decimal to the left.

GRAMS

How much mass is equal to a gram? a single Smartie a U.S. banknote (any denomination) A brand new nickel is exactly 5 grams. The mass is about the same as:

How much mass is a kilogram?  1 kilogram = 1,000 grams  And about the same as:  2.2 pounds 1 kg 1 lb  a textbook  2 loaves of bread

What is the mass of a milligram?  1 milligram = 1/1000 or gram  And about the same as:  a single grain of sand  a grain of salt

LITERS

What is the capacity of a liter?  The capacity of a liter is about the same as:  1 quart 1 liter ≈ 1.06 quarts A bottle of soda is equal to 2 liters.

What is the capacity of a kiloliter(kL)?  1 kiloliter = 1,000 liters  1 kiloliter = 1 cubic meter  About the same as:  the capacity of this hot tub

What is the capacity of a milliliter(mL)?  1 milliliter = 1/1000 or liter  1 milliliter = 1 cubic centimeter  1 teaspoon is the same as 5 mL
