Band-Aid Inventor: Earle Dickson Invented: 1921 Invention: Bandages to be used to heal small wounds. Why: Earle’s wife was constantly cutting her fingers in the kitchen. Cool Fact: Sales of Band-Aids were slow until Johnson & Johnson decided to give Boy Scout troops free Band-Aids as a publicity stunt.

Corn Flakes Inventor: Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and his brother Invented: 1894 Invention: Cereal Why: At the hospital he worked at stressed healthy living. One day, after cooking some wheat, the men were called away. When they finally returned, the wheat had become stale. They decided to force the tempered grain through the rollers anyway. Surprisingly, the grain did not come out in long sheets of dough. Instead each wheat berry was flattened and came out as a thin flake. The brothers baked the flakes and were delighted with their new invention. They realized they had discovered a new and delicious cereal. Cool Fact: This invention was an accident.

Barbie Inventor: Ruth Handler Invented: 1959 Invention: Fashion doll. Cool Fact: Barbie was one of the first ‘adult’ dolls. Up until this time most dolls were infants. The dolls were named after Ruth’s children Barbara and Kenneth.

Tape Inventor: Richard G. Drew Invented:1923 Invention: Sticky tape. Why: It was first made for painters. Cool fact: It was first used by painters to make a straight line between two colors.
