In summer,Snowy Owls are brownish with dark spots and stripes. In winter they are completely white. In summer they blend into the tundra colors and look like shadows; in winter, they look like the snow covering the ground. Adult males may be almost pure white although they have up to three tail bands. Characteristics EYE wing Beak Leg

Habitat The Snowy Owl is a bird of Arctic tundra or open grasslands and fields. They rarely venture into forested areas. In North America, during breeding season, snowy owls prefer high rolling tundra. In winter they migrate to the northern Great Plains, which closely resemble tundra habitat.in the winter it is found in farming areas with open fields of low-cut plants, marshes and even dunes.

Food During the spring breeding season, owls will feed on eggs of waterfowl, including geese and swans which are very much larger than they are.Snowy Owls build their nests in a place crawling with lemmings because the lemming and other small animals make 80% of the owl’s food. Some nesting owls switch from lemmings to voles to young ptarmigan when they become available.

Enemies The most common danger to the snowy owl is starvation. In the northern regions the older owl will have fewer enemies. The most danger to the snowy owl is man.In the northern regions of Canada and in Scotland the snowy owl is protected by law. Ho Person

Babies Snowy owls breed on the tundra and are skilled at hiding eggs.Their nests are usually made out of dried tundra plants. The eggs look a lot a lot like the plants the mother used to make the nests so they blend in.The mother bird must move carefully so that none finds the nest.

Inuit Uses The Eskimo were well in contact with the snowy owl and their habits.

Interesting Facts The snowy owl’s thick white feathers from it’s head to it’s toes to hold the heat in.In a blizzard a snowy owl will fly facing towards the wind. The wind will press against it’s feathers and keep in the heat.
