Student Success and Retention Initiatives DUS Meeting ● Fall 2010 ● Cynthia Demetriou ● Retention Coordinator

Academic Early Warnings  The Office of Undergraduate Education is currently in the process of developing a new Academic Early Warning system within Connect Carolina.  This system will give instructors the opportunity to identify and communicate with students when they show early signs of academic distress.

Academic Early Warnings  This new system will be a significant improvement over the previous paper-based format.  The system will be in an online, comment-based format that will allow instructors to provide specific, constructive feedback to struggling students.

Academic Early Warnings  It is going to take some time to transition from the paper- based system to the online system. As part of our transition process, there will be no paper-based early warning rosters this fall.

Academic Early Warnings  It is projected that the online system will be available soon.  In the meantime, we want to be sure that no students who could benefit from an early warning “fall through the cracks.”

Academic Early Warnings: What to do for Fall 2010 If there are any students instructors are concerned about and for whom they would normally submit an early warning, please the course name and number as well as the student’s name and PID to between September 20 th and October 11 th The last day to drop a course for the fall 2010 semester is October 18, 2010.

Academic Early Warnings  We will follow-up with all students for whom s are submitted. We will make students aware of instructors’ concerns and suggest resources for improving their academic progress.  Thank you for your support as we transition to this improved system.  Instructors with first year students enrolled in their courses were sent this information by on September 10, 2010.

Academic Probation Reminders All students in the CAS are directed to

What do I do if I am on academic probation?  The first thing a student on academic probation should do is make a commitment to return to good academic standing. You must complete the following 4 steps: 1. Complete the Self-Assessment. 2. Complete the online Student Success Seminar. 3. Sign the Probation Contract found at the end of the seminar. 4. Make an appointment with your advisor.Self-AssessmentStudent Success Seminar  All students on probation are expected to meet with an academic advisor at least 2 times during the semester to discuss their progress towards returning to good standing.

Academic Probation: Information for Students  You must make an appointment using the online appointment scheduler:  Walk-in appointments cannot be used to fulfill the probation requirements.

Academic Probation: Information for Students  You must bring a copy of the completed Self- Assessment and the signed Probation Contract to the meeting with the advisor.  If you do not complete ALL of the probation steps above, a “stop” will be placed on your account preventing you from registering for future courses.  If you have been on probation in a prior term, you still must complete the steps listed above.

Academic Probation: Bounce Back Program  In addition to these steps, it is highly recommended that you sign up for the Bounce Back program.  Bounce Back is a semester-long program in which students meet on a weekly-basis in a group setting to foster resiliency, scholastic and personal skills. To register for Bounce Back, Dr. Schmitz-Sciborski at

Academic Probation: Professional Schools  The academic eligibility rules apply to all undergraduate students even those in professional schools.  Students in the College of Arts and Sciences on academic probation are required to complete a probation intervention.

Academic Probation: Professional Schools  sent to the student and the Dean of the professional school at the beginning of the semester.  Students in professional schools do not have to complete the intervention; however, it is recommend that they work closely with the academic advisors in their program.  Professional school students may complete the intervention steps at if they want to.  Students who are on academic probation get a stop placed on their account during the semester. When this occurs, I will remove the stop all professional students.
