Carbohydrates What are Carbohydrates? - Sugars! Purpose: - Quick source of energy (fuel) for our cells Monomers: Monosaccharides (glucose, fructose) Polymers: Polysaccharides (starch, glycogen)

Lipids What are lipids? - Fats, oils, waxes Purpose: - Energy storage, insulation, cell membranes Monomers: None Polymers: None Fatty Acids

Proteins What are Proteins? - Structures that build us. Purpose: - Building structures, pigments and enzymes. Monomers: Amino Acids Polymers: Polypeptides

Nucleic Acids What are Nucleic Acids? - DNA Purpose: - Storing of genetic information. Monomers: Nucleotides Polymers: DNA

What happens when you eat food? 1.Food enters stomach 2.Stomach breaks down all organic material -Food is broken down into monomers 3.Food moves through intestines -Only food broken into monomers are absorbed. 4. Undigested & unabsorbed materials pass through the body.

Assignment Create a foldable, which identifies the characteristics of the four organic molecules. Assignment: 1.Using 2 sheets of paper, create a foldable with 4 tabs. Label these tabs: Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids. 2.For each organic molecule tab, include the following: a. Name of the monomers & polymers (ex. Glucose, starch, amino acids, etc.) b. Colored graphic of the polymers/ monomers. c. Function(s) of the organic molecule (carbs are for energy, etc.) d. Random fact about the organic molecule (Cellulose is a polysaccharide that humans cannot digest, etc.)
