HADJIGEORGIOU GF, MARKOGIANNAKIS G, PETROSYAN T, ZISAKIS A, PANTELI A, KELESIS C, HADJIGEORGIOU FG, VARSOS V DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSURGERY RED CROSS HOSPITAL, ATHENS, GREECE KEYWORDS: TRAUMATIC, INTRAVENTRICULAR, HEMORRHAGE Isolated traumatic intraventricular hemorrhage in adults: report of a case

Isolated traumatic intraventricular hemorrhage in adults: report of a case Hadjigeorgiou GF, Markogiannakis G, Petrosyan T, Zisakis A, Panteli A, Kelesis C, Hadjigeorgiou FG, Varsos V Introduction-Aim  Isolated intraventricular hemorrhage of traumatic origin (tIVH) is a rare finding. In particular, quite a few cases, all concerning pediatric population, have been reported. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report in the literature of isolated tIVH in an adult

Isolated traumatic intraventricular hemorrhage in adults: report of a case Hadjigeorgiou GF, Markogiannakis G, Petrosyan T, Zisakis A, Panteli A, Kelesis C, Hadjigeorgiou FG, Varsos V Material-Methods  A 35-year-old male was admitted to the emergency department after a traffic accident. His co-driver reported that the patient had no neurological symptoms prior to the accident.

Isolated traumatic intraventricular hemorrhage in adults: report of a case Hadjigeorgiou GF, Markogiannakis G, Petrosyan T, Zisakis A, Panteli A, Kelesis C, Hadjigeorgiou FG, Varsos V Results  On admission his Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was 8 (E:1,V:2,M:5), his pupils were miotic and reacted bilaterally to light. The Computed Tomography of the brain showed an isolated intraventricular hemmorhage, without evidence of acute hydrocephalus. The patient was intubated and transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. Image 1: CT scan of the brain showing hemmorhage within the lateral ventricles

Isolated traumatic intraventricular hemorrhage in adults: report of a case Hadjigeorgiou GF, Markogiannakis G, Petrosyan T, Zisakis A, Panteli A, Kelesis C, Hadjigeorgiou FG, Varsos V Results  On the following day an MR Angiography was performed, that showed no evidence of vascular anomaly. The follow-up CT scans showed a progressive improvement of the tIVH and twelve days after his admission was extubated and returrned to the ward. The patient was discharged from the hospital twenty-three days after his admission on a GCS of 15 and six months after the patient has a Glasgow Outcome Scale of 5.

Isolated traumatic intraventricular hemorrhage in adults: report of a case Hadjigeorgiou GF, Markogiannakis G, Petrosyan T, Zisakis A, Panteli A, Kelesis C, Hadjigeorgiou FG, Varsos V Conclusion  Isolated tIVH is extremely rare and its outcome is unclear. Although our patient was admitted in a low GCS, he had a good outcome without requiring any surgical intervention. Literature supports, that often a poor outcome seems to be the consequence of associated injuries.
