A: Introduction to a hospital (part 1) Who is Jordi Pons? A fourth year student from Barcelona Who is Dr Barron? Is one of the doctors at the Royal Infirmary Hospital, Edinburgh What is General hospital? General hospital deals with all types of patients and illnesses, except paediatrics. Specialist hospital? It is a hospital for sick children. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Surgical High Dependency Unit (HDU)
A: Introduction to a hospital (part 2) Outpatients: They are people who come hospital to attend a clinic or to have tests or treatment and then return home on the same day. Inpatients: They stay in the hospital for one or more days. Wards: They are rooms to stay at the hospital. Day surgery unit: It is a patients treatment that requires only one day.
B: Outpatients Accident and Emergency Department (A & E) It is also called “Casualty” It is where patients are acutely ill with a sudden, serious condition come for treatment and assessment. What does Outpatient with an appointment do? Out patients with an appointment go to a clinic in one of the Outpatient Departments (OPDs) How can outpatients visit hospital? The outpatients have usually been referred to the hospital by their GP who writes a referral letter to the consultant explaining the patient’s problem.
C: Inpatients How is the process with inpatients? They are admitted to the hospital. If there is a lot of demand for the treatment they need, they are put on a waiting list for admission. Meanwhile, their GP may arrange the admission by telephone because of their condition, since they are acutely ill. Or They are seen in the A&E Department, where the doctor on duty and arrange the admission. And larger hospitals may have an assessment unit where patients can be admitted temporarily while their condition is assessed. Assessment: decisions for the patient’s condition, to be discharged or not
