English I CP Friday 11/15 Please take out: Agenda: Pen/pencil Assignment notebook English binder Fahrenheit Thesis + Body paragraph self edit 2. Fahrenheit 451 questions and group discussion Learning Target: Homework: Properly self edit “Harrison Bergeron” thesis + body paragraph. -Read pages by Monday. Stop at “The house was silent.” -“Harrison Bergeron” thesis + body paragraph due Monday.

Proper MLA heading and header This is how you properly write your heading in MLA format: Nick Papageorgio (student’s name) Mr. Avella (teacher’s name) English CP 5 (title of class and period) 15 November 2013 (day 1 st, spell out month, write out year) Always make sure font size is 12 point and paper is double spaced!

Proper MLA heading and header In order to properly insert a header, follow the following steps. 1. Click on “Insert” tab at top of screen and select Page Number. 2. Select the option that has the page number at the top right. 3. Type your last name only. Have a space between last name and number Look at Nick Papageorgio’s essay!

Example of format Your thesis statement comes before your body paragraph. You should not indent your thesis statement because it is part of an introduction paragraph. Your body paragraph comes next and is indented because you are beginning a new paragraph. Make sure all parts of your body paragraph are present.

Self-edit Before you mark up your paper, read your draft! Read all the way through and do not stop to make any corrections. Now, read your draft a second time. Avoid using these words: BADGET, GOTVERY GOODREALLY STUFFTHINGS Do not time travel! Present Past Present KEEP EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN BOOKS AND FILMS IN PRESENT TENSE (NO PAST TENSE).

Self-edit TITLES OF BOOKS AND FILMS ARE ITALICIZED AND CAPITALIZED. EX: To Kill a Mockingbird. If handwritten, To Kill a Mockingbird. Short stories are in quotations “ “ IN DISCUSSING CITATIONS, MR. AVELLA SAYS, “QUOTE EXACTLY LIKE THIS. ALWAYS INTRODUCE WHO SAYS IT, USE A COMMA, AND THEN START YOUR QUOTATION MARKS. THE AUTHOR OF THE WORK GOES IN THE PARENTHESES ALONG WITH THE PAGE NUMBER. DO NOT PUT ‘PAGE,’ ‘PG.’ OR ‘#.’THE PERIOD GOES AFTER THE LAST PARENTHESIS. IF IT LOOKS DIFFERENT THAN THIS, IT’S WRONG” (AVELLA 46).

Self-edit Circle all contractions: can’t, won’t, don’t, etc. Could ofCould have Write them out!

Look at your thesis statement Do you have all four required elements of a thesis statement? 1. Narrowing phrase (recognizes other side of the argument) 2. Title and author (short stories are in “quotation marks”) 3. Stance (your opinion) 4. 3 prongs (your 3 reasons for your argument)

Example thesis While many readers confuse the protagonist as a heroic figure in Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron”, he most definitely is not a noble hero because he defies the government, he kills an innocent ballerina, and he is a self-centered hooligan.

Body paragraph elements 1. Does my topic sentence state an argument? Can someone disagree with my topic sentence? Does my topic sentence elaborate on one of my three prongs? 2. Do I have 1-2 sentences of plot summary? Am I describing the setting, characters, and conflicts from a scene in the story? 3. Does my quotation match my argument? Is this the best evidence I can use to prove my point? 4. Do I have 3 sentences of analysis? Does my analysis explain to my audience how my quotation is relevant? Am I explaining why this scene and quotation is important to my argument? 5. Does my concluding sentence sum up what I was just arguing? Am I reminding my audience why they should care about my argument? (closing argument)

Fahrenheit 451 group discussion With your group, make a list of at least 5 questions you have about the book (what we have read up so far). Bad examples: What’s going on? I don’t understand anything? Good examples: Why does Guy read poetry to Mildred’s friends? Why does Guy kill Captain Beatty?
