CHANGING WINDOWS CHAPTER 3 LESSON 1

VOCABULARY Automatic Grapher- A calculator/computer software that draws the graph of a relation Viewing Window (Viewing Rectangle)- The subset of the coordinate plane that appears on the screen of an automatic grapher, and is described by a specific set of x and y values Default Window- The viewing window which is present in an automatic grapher until changed by the user Asymptote- A line that the graph of a function y=f(x) approaches as the variable x approaches some fixed value or as x increases/decreases without bound Points of Discontinuity- Word used to describe a “jump” in the graph Transformation- A one-to-one correspondence between sets of points

READING VIEWING WINDOW Press WINDOW button (top, second from left) Xmin: smallest x value in window Xmax: largest x value in window Xscl: number of x values for each dash on x-axis Ymin: smallest y value in window Ymax: largest y value in window Yscl: number of y values for each dash on y-axis Written as Xmin ≤ x ≤ Xmax Written as Ymin ≤ y ≤ Ymax

FINDING DEFAULT WINDOW Press GRAPH button (top right corner) Press ZOOM button (top middle button) Select option 6: Zstandard Press ENTER Press WINDOW button (top, second button from left) These are your default window settings

CHOOSING A GOOD WINDOW Window should show graph in it Should not be zoomed in too close that characteristics are missed Should not be zoomed out too far away that characteristics are overlooked Should be just right to see any curves or discontinuities

ZOOMFIT On Calculator Press ZOOM button (top middle) Select Option 0:ZoomFit This will give you what the calculator believes to be a good fit for a window setting for the graph Not always the best however
