Welsh Public Health Conference 2013 October 2013 Neath Port Talbot Mr Roderick Hughes

Background Information:- We consulted with Mr Hughes (Rod) on 11 th June 2010 and he consequently started his exercise the following week. During his time with us, Mr Hughes participated in 30 exercise sessions with other members of the scheme. These included gym based exercise, outdoor walking and class based circuit sessions. At his first consultation, it was observed that Mr Hughes to be quiet but hopeful of success with us, and indeed he was. From the reserved client he was, he gradually became a morale leader within his class, gaining confidence with each week. His knowledge of health and fitness grew tremendously, as did his feelings of physical, emotional and social well-being. Comparing his pre and post course scores on a scale of 1 – 10, they read: physical- 3 against 8, emotional- 2 against 7, social- 3 against 8.

Physiological adaptations over 16 weeks Rod continued to reduce all of these measures and in conjunction with his GP ceased using certain prescribed medications including anti depressants which he was so happy to achieve.
