School Re-opening Update Presented to the Incidence Management System (IMS) By The Ministry of Education

School Calendar February 16, schools re-opened. Schools that are not ready can open later. No school will be penalized, but must. complete the 197 instructional days based on the curriculum.

Distribution of IPC Materials to all Schools (Public & Private) # of schools served- 4,038 # of students served-1.02 m # of IPC kits delivered- 7,252 # of schools un-served - 1,216 (to be verified) (This does not include the Higher Education Institutions, Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs) and Vocational/Technical Institutions).

Distribution of IPC Materials (Last mile delivery) Partners  Education Officers (EOs)  Partners NGOs  Local Authorities  UNICEF  UNMIL (air drop)

Training on the Protocols for Safe School Environment  Over 17,000 persons, including Education Officers, Principals, Teachers and PTA members have been trained on the Protocols.  School based training on the Protocols is ongoing.

Social Mobilization  Dissemination of information on Protocols to schools is ongoing.  Key messages on Protocols developed for teachers, students, parents and communities.  Regular press briefings at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism.  Dissemination of information on Protocols on national and community radio stations ongoing.  Messages need to be developed to assure parents that the school environment is safe.

Challenges  The delivery of IPC kits to remote and inaccessible areas.  Some school administrators were not available to receive IPC kits in some remote counties.  Communication difficulties in hard-to-reach areas.  The urgency associated with delivering the IPC materials to the un-served schools, especially in Montserrado County.

Remedial Activities  Collection and verification of data of the un- served schools o Kg – 12 th Grade o Teacher Training Institutions o Tertiary Institutions  Procurement and Distribution of additional IPC materials  Phase Two distribution of the back-to-school kits
