Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Jack Barokas, Tel Aviv University Terena Networking Conference 2012 May Reykjavík, Iceland Three use cases on engaging digital media in higher education

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors  Introduction  Lecture recording systems  Study results  Conclusions and future work Presentation Agenda

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors  Educational video media - a growing need - how do we meet this need?  Three different lecture capture systems deployed in three different higher education institutions  How do students use these systems?  How are these systems accepted? Introduction

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors  Introduction  Lecture recording systems  Study results  Conclusions and future work

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Opencast Matterhorn  Matterhorn is a free, open-source platform to support the management of educational audio and video content.  Institutions will use Matterhorn to:  produce lecture recordings  manage existing video  serve designated distribution channels  provide user interfaces to engage students with educational videos.  Version 1.3 recently released

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors  Introduction  Lecture recording systems  Study results  Conclusions and future work

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Study results –Tel Aviv  ‘ Introduction to Surgery Clerkship’  Mandatory course for hospital work certification  Fully online course at Tel Aviv University  10 lectures including the video recordings, PPT and quizzes  76 students, 50 attending study (n=50)  Students usage of and their reactions to the online learning experience survey

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Study results –Tel Aviv  Quizzes were reported to be the most helpful online resource, while the video recordings and PPT followed respectively

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Study results –Tel Aviv  Most of the students studied hours  Over 75% of the students spent more 10 hours studying online

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Study results –Tel Aviv  Students studied mostly in the afternoon and evening hours  Chart source: LMS complete semester logs of 130 medicine students learning 12 fully online courses

 The majority of students (60%) reported that they preferred learning in a fully online environment. Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Study results –Tel Aviv

introduction to surgery introduction to surgery New York - TAU Medicine Program introduction to surgery Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Jack Barokas, Tel Aviv University TAU Medicine School students survey updates

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Study results – Osnabruck  Data taken from first semester computer science class  Face to Face course recorded at Osnabruck University, approx. 200 students  Study examined students usage of recorded materials and preferred methods of learning

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Study results – Osnabruck  As with the case of online students, recorded lectures were a popular learning resource.  Students own notes about the lecture were of less interest when understanding the content than the lecture recordings.

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Study results – Osnabruck  Data about weekly lecture recording usage shows that students do not usually watch complete recorded episodes: they look for certain parts in the recordings, repeat them or skip sections entirely.

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors  The fear of having an empty lecture hall if recorded material is available is an oft- cited issue by instructors  However, student tend to indicate that recorded lectures are sufficient but not ideal for learning Study results – Osnabruck

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Study results – Saskatchewan  Is privacy an issue in lecture recording?  Two studies conducted in University of Saskatchewan  80 students participating in two courses:  Introductory computer science – some students in view of camera  Introductory mathematics – only lecturer in view of camera

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Study results – Saskatchewan  response breakdowns demonstrate clearly that privacy is a significant issue for a minority of students

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors  Introduction  Lecture recording systems  Study results  Conclusions and future work

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors Conclusions and future work  The validity of cross-institutional studies based on home grown systems is problematic  There is a need for more critical analysis of the way the content is produced, managed, reused and distributed  Increasing student demand for recorded content should be leveraged to persuade management to provide additional resources for these needs.  The 3 independently developed systems use similar functionality and features to meet student expectations

Lecture Capture: Student Perceptions, Expectations, and Behaviors  There were differences in the way recordings were used as support to F2F learning and as fully online courses  Future studies will focus on a comparison between student multi-year achievements in traditional F2F learning and in fully online study on the same course.  Teachers perception and expectation regarding course video recordings Conclusions and future work
