Pre-AICE Algebra I Relating Graphs to Events Relations and Functions 4-22

Understanding Function Graphs We can use graphs to show the relationship between two variables.

Example #1 Having left home in a hurry, I’d only gone a short distance when I realized I hadn’t turned off the oven, so I went back to do so. I then set out again immediately. Sketch my distance from home as a function of time.

Example #2 The graph to the right shows the relationship between time and total distance traveled by a teacher riding a bus. What does the flat part of the graph represent? The first section of the graph is steeper than the last section. Was the bus traveling faster in the first part of the trip of the last?

Example #3 The graph shows a car journey from Windhoek. How far from Windhoek is the car at 10:30? When is the car half way between B and C? At what time is the car 30 km from Windhoek? Find the speed of the car from C to D.

Relations and Functions

Functions vs. Not Functions

Example #4 Determine if the following relations are functions. Explain why or why not. a.{(-2, 3), (4, -6), (-4, 9), (-2, 5)} a.{(5, 9), (4, 6), (-1, -5), (-2, 6)}

Functions

Example #5 Determine if the relation is a function. a. b.

Domain and Range VOCAB WordDefinition Domain Range

Example #6 Find the domain and range of the given ordered pair: {(2,3), (9,-6), (8,7), (-3,3)} Domain: _______________________ Range: ____________________________

Example #7 Find the domain and range of the relationship represented by the data in the table: Rainfall (inches) Amount of Water in Trashcan (ounces) Domain:_____________________________ Range:_______________________________

Example #8 Find the domain and range of the relationship represented by the data in the following graphs: a. b. Domain: ____________________ Domain:______________________ Range: ______________________ Range: _______________________
