Why should my kid be in the BHS Band? There are hundreds of reasons…I’ll give you a few good ones. -Our motto is “Work hard, play hard.” We are good at what we do and we have fun doing it Friends on day one of high school next year. -Honors credit available if you take Marching and Concert Band. -Teaches discipline, time management, and problem solving through performance. -Colleges LOVE seeing band students. Students that are involved in band learn skills that make them successful in college…not to mention scholarships. -You get half a PE credit for marching band! -Next year we are taking a trip!

But what about… …the time commitment? Yes, it is a time commitment. We value your time and have the shortest/fewest rehearsals of any high school band in the county, and are still competitive. At the end of October, there are no more after school commitments until concert season. Rehearsals are intense, we get done what we need to, and then your kid gets to go be involved in whatever else they want. We want well-rounded students, and a our staff comes to rehearsal with a game-plan so your child’s time is not wasted.

But what about… …band camp? It’s hot and you have to move around a lot and get in shape. Can I just be in concert band? Going outside and moving is good for you. It’s called being healthy. Plus, a tan looks good at the freshman dance. You don’t want to show up to concert band after not having played for 6 months, so we HIGHLY encourage you to be in Marching Band in the fall AND Concert Band in the spring.

But what about… All the other classes I want to take? At BHS we have an elective focus requirement of 3 credits of the same elective during your high school career anyway. Band fulfills that requirement. The students in band are the brightest students in the school. They are national merit finalists, valedictorians, and multi-AP course students. Band students find out how to be successful in whatever it is they want to pursue because of the skills they learn in band. It isn’t a coincidence. What do new members need tonight? We need a reservation form and a $100 camp fee check for each member of next year’s marching band program. These items are due tonight. What does the fee go toward? Music Arrangement, drill writing, and a tee shirt at band camp.

To prepare for next school year: Make sure the student is registered for the appropriate band class (4 th or 5 th block, or percussion technique). Rehearsals - every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 pm to 6 pm through October. Saturday Band Camp. Football Games. TBA Band Competitions (3).

Band Camp Checklist: Major Highlights: -Water Jug, Small Towel and Sunscreen -Appropriate Clothing (Tennis shoes!!!) -Get outside and be healthy this summer -Instrument in working order and the correct equipment -Flip folder and lyre
