Welcome To the Clothes Swap

Human Trafficking A definition Human trafficking is the fastest growing global crime - Human trafficking is defined simply as the: ●recruitment and movement of a person ●through deception or force ●for the purpose of exploitation

Men, women and children are trafficked within their own countries and across international borders. Trafficking affects every continent and every country.

STOP THE TRAFFIK is a global movement of individuals, communities and organisations fighting to prevent human trafficking around the world.

Local Action Every instance of trafficking involves a person being trafficked from a community into a community. Therefore the community must work together to prevent it. STOP THE TRAFFIK work to inspire, inform, equip and mobilise communities.

The Campaign It is a little known fact that 200,000 young women and girls between the ages of are trafficked into cotton spinning, weaving and dyeing factories in Tamil Nadu, India.

This region in southern India accounts for over 65% of India’s spinning units and 60% of India’s knitted products. India’s US$115 billion textile and garment industry employs over 35 million people. Tamil Nadu, India

Unmarried women and girls from years are targeted by recruitment brokers to work in the factories, spinning, weaving and dyeing cotton. They are recruited under the guise of an apprenticeship scheme known as the “Sumangali Scheme.” Sumangali Scheme

The young women and girls are recruited under false promises of ●A lump sum payment ●Training opportunities ●Good accommodation ●Good working hours and conditions Sumangali Scheme

The Reality ●Hazardous working conditions ●Lack of safety equipment ●Long working days of 12 hours without breaks or meals ●Compulsory overtime ●Rarely a written employment contract ●Arbitrary wage deductions for food, lodging and medical care ●Limited freedom of movement ●Abuse is common ●Only 35% of women receive the lump sum payment This has to STOP!

The Campaign Vision The Make Fashion Traffik Free campaign invites consumers, who are on the demand side of garment production (thats you!) to urge your favourite fashion brands and retailers to take action by committing to… The Make Fashion Traffik Free Protocol, with the intention of eliminating human trafficking within their business.

What You Can Do Ask your favourite retailers to take action! ●Deliver some postcards ●Send them a letter ●Promote the campaign through social media

Thank You
