E-Business Suite High Availability & Scalability

Why Should We Care About High Availability and Scalability? The increased importance and user loads due to global deployments capabilities and self- service aspects are driving the need for increased system availability, and system scalability. Current economic conditions have increased focus on reducing costs. This is driving companies to explore ways to decrease hardware costs.

Business Drivers Availability Transparency Require no changes to existing applications Affordability Allow low-cost computing on a smaller servers Flexibility Allow users to easily adapt to their hardware infrastructure over time Manageability Allow users to manage a cluster of servers as if they were one Scalability No single point of failure Ability to add servers when needed

Business Goals Technology that equals real business value High availability capabilities should allow for decreased downtime which can directly effect lost revenue Scalability capabilities should deliver the same performance and management as higher priced servers on moderately priced hardware

Current Approaches  Buy more hardware – Increase server size when additional processing power is required – Add a server for failover purposes – Add load balance routers to mask failures in middle-tier  Functionally partition applications – HR on one server – AR on one server  Distribute load to client machines – Off-load reporting software to end-users

Oracle Solution

High Availability & Scalability with EBS High Availability & Scalability Achieve high availability and scalability for E-Business Suite by utilizing Oracle9i RAC on the database tier Achieve high availability and scalability by leveraging Oracle9iAS clustering and load- balancing feature for E-business Suite Provide a total disaster recovery solution for 11i by utilizing Oracle9i Data Guard

Key Capabilities Using the Oracle Solution Enables you to:   Achieve High Scalability   Balance the Load   Achieve Fault Tolerance   Reduce Your TCO

High Scalability Add database and middle-tier nodes as the need presents itself Achieve scalability transparently to your application Achieve the same performance with commodity hardware as higher priced machines Achieve High Scalability

Balance the Load  Utilizing Oracle supplied capabilities to achieve load balancing across your middle and database tiers  Achieve load balancing without purchasing additional software or hardware products  Enable effective utilization of all hardware resource

Achieve Fault Tolerance  Achieve fault tolerance with your 11i E-Business Suite  Have users on surviving nodes unaffected by node failure  Seamlessly fail-over Concurrent Manager requests in case of hardware failure  Provide complete disaster recovery for your 11i Applications utilizing Oracle Data Guard

Reduce Your TCO  The move to Linux/Intel high-performance clusters from large and costly RISC based servers has been a “win-win” decision for Oracle IT. The deployment of 18 Dell-2650s replaced 4 high-end UNIX/RISC servers in the middle tier. Oracle ERP users have noticed marked improvements in application performance since migration to Linux/Intel middle tier.  Cost of ownership can be reduced by migrating middle-tier for Oracle E-Business Suite to Linux/Intel architecture.  Orace9i RAC on Linux presents a very attractive solution at very low cost. It is also a very scalable solution with high availability.

Customer Adoption

Case Study: “When you operate 24/7, when there are literally hundreds of businesses at stake at any moment in time, availability, speed, and reliability are critical in an IT system. That's why we selected Oracle.” -- Fotis Karonis, Director of IT and Telecomm., Athens International Airport Oracle E-Business Suite: Purchasing, Financials and Sales Analyzers, Financials, Inventory Key Points – –Productivity improvement – –Centrally managed IT systems and networks

Case Study: Oracle E-Business Suite: Human Resources, Advanced Benefits, Self-Service Human Resources, Discoverer, Financials Key Points – –1,800 retail stores, with over 90,000 employees in the U.S. and Canada – –4 TB of sales and inventory data needed to run operations – –Simplified data and applications migrations – –Reduced complexity and administration costs – –Increased performance and scalability – –Streamlined business processes “Oracle has simplified our business practices and will meet our needs for scalability and performance as we continue to grow.” -- Doug Reynolds, Information Services Leader, Best Buy Co., Inc.

Case Study: Oracle E-Business Suite: Interaction Center, iStore, Marketing Online, Order Management Key Points – –Self-service order volume of 50 per minute attained – –Ticket average through iStore 10-12% higher than offline average – –Order accuracy is 15% improved because it is completely in the hands of the consumer “Oracle delivers flexibility and scalability, their applications are mature, and they're here to stay.” -- John Black, VP of Information Services, Papa John's International

Case Study: Oracle E-Business Suite: Financials Key Points – –Period open on 500 million balances in 11 hours and 8 minutes – –Extracted 500 million balances (including the merge of 26 dimension values) in 48 minutes – –Generate daily balance sheet based on 500 million balances in 23 minutes – –Import and post of million journals per hour “Particularly in the world of banking, high performance and utter reliability are critical system requirements. Our benchmark shows that Oracle software can reliably deliver one of the world's largest general ledgers and still fulfill our stringent requirements for performance - an impressive result.” -- Thierry Schaffluetzel, Project Director, GEAR CH, UBS Switzerland

Analyst Quotes

"Oracle9i Application Server is designed to meet the availability, manageability, performance and security requirements for mission- critical Internet applications.“ Analyst Testimonials -- Gartner Product Report, Oracle9i Application Server August 2002 “9iAS and the Oracle9i Database have been optimized for one another so that the combination provides a complete framework that covers front-end applications (Web Server) to middleware (Application Server) to back-end business systems (Database)."

CustomerQuestions

Customer Questions Question: Answer: Can I also deploy my other application on RAC? All types of applications can scale effectively without having to be specifically tailored for clustering environments. Migration is transparent: no specific redesign or code changes are required for existing applications, no explicit application segmentation or data partitioning is required. Initial investments made for application and database software running on single node environments are preserved.

Customer Questions Question: Answer: What hardware scalability does 11i provide? Oracle E-Business Suite 11i, comprising both Oracle9iAS and the Oracle9i Database, is available on a large selection of hardware and operating systems, scaling from low-end hardware to high-end clusters. Suite supports all major Unix platforms, and a variety of other systems. Therefore administrators can upgrade hardware and operating systems without changing their software platform or rewriting their applications.

Customer Questions Question: Answer: Is there a single point of failure with 11i technology? Oracle9iAS has no single point of failure and can be deployed in a fully redundant configuration. Oracle9iAS automatically detects system components failures, re-routes connections, restarts failed processes, and can move executing application code to a different node in some cases
