Prospects of Livestock Rearing In Puducherry Presented by: Dr.J.Tamizhkumaran Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education

PUDUCHERRY Four regions – Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe & Yanam Pondicherry region- – Human population – 9 lakhs (out of 12 lakhs) – Rapid Industrialization and Urbanization – Increase in per capita income Shrinking area under food and fodder crops Majority who own livestock are landless Heavy demand for Livestock & Livestock products

Market share of fluid milk in Puducherry

Reasons for decrease in milk production Differential Milk procurement prices – Local - Rs /- – Outsourcing - Rs. 22/- Steep rise in input prices – GNC (Rs.46/ Kg), Wheat bran (Rs.16/Kg) Decreasing area under fodder – 40,000 ha(2000) to 20,000 ha (2008) – Green fodder scarce input Farmers losing interest in dairy farming

Livestock production in Puducherry Egg production – No Commercial layer farms - Backyard poultry egg production – 40 lakhs Outsourcing: Every week 2 lakh eggs & Once in a month 1 lakh Desi egg

Livestock production in Puducherry Meat production – 2 municipality & 935 unauthorized slaughter house – Chicken – Very few broiler farms – Chevon – Goat population – 69,000 Goats slaughtered- 4,06,052 – Pork and beef – local production

Conclusions There is a yawning gap between the demand and supply of all livestock products in Puducherry and even with outside supply, the gap still exists, thanks to rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. It is an irony the livestock owners are not being benefitted by the ever increasing market potential for all livestock products in Puducherry.

Conclusions Dependency on neighbouring states for all the livestock products is increasing gradually at the cost of local productrion.. Decrease in milk procurement over the years is due to differential milk procurement prices (local Rs.16.5/- and outsourcing Rs.22/-) and low feed milk price ratios, and steep rise in the input prices. There is a shift in the occupation of dairy farmers to landless agricultural labour as the former is considered no more remunerative.

Low milk procurement low production high production- competition Low demand High production increase in population increase in productivity increased inputs availability area under food crops fodder crops steep increas in put prices
