B101 Presentation Volkswagen Polo Bluemotion 2 Eco-friendly Bluemotion 2 - £ 13,170 (Ref 1) Standard Polo - £11,175 (Ref2)

How the environment ultimately affects the price of the car Price Environment Materials Research Low EmissionsFuel Efficiency Build Quality Recycling

Materials Materials used to reduce fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions: Low rolling-resistance tyres are used on the Bluemotion to replace the usual specification tyres used on the Polo. They can reduce CO2 emissions by around 4g/km (Ref3) and increase fuel economy by 2mpg (Ref4). These tyres as a consequence cost on average 20% more then the usual tyre (Ref5). Lighter materials are used in the engine and ultimately all around to help increase fuel economy. Though these lighter alloys used for the wheels, bonnet and interior of the car cost a fraction of an estimate of 10% more then the standard components. (Ref6,7)

Recycling The Bluemotion Polo was designed and made to be 95% recyclable (Ref8). Recycled and recyclable materials are used to the maximum in the build of the car (Ref9). But using these recycled materials cost more because of the recycling process involving sorting and melting down of materials. It costs $28 per ton to landfill waste compared with $147 a ton to recycle (Ref10). Labelling parts for identification and sorting is done in the manufacture of the Polo Bluemotion (Ref11). This means for example certain plastics are labelled for recycling using there grade to help the dismantle process when the car is recycled at the end of its life.

Research/New Design To create a more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly car out of the Polo Bluemotion the engineers did a lot of research and testing. The front grill and underside of the car have been made more aerodynamic. This helps to drop the car's aerodynamic coefficient rating from 0.32 to 0.30 (Ref13). The front bumper has been extended and a small yet useful rear wing been added. Gears 3,4 and 5 have been lengthened which accounts to around 2mpg of the overall gain alone (Ref13). These research gains in finding simple improvements have made the car more environmentally friendly(as shown on the next slide). But this research based on the standard Polo has increased the price of the Polo once given the badge of Bluemotion 2 by £2000 (Ref1,2). This price increase is mainly the research and improvements to make it more eco-friendly. Showing that to make a car more environmentally friendly it ultimately will increase the price.

Build Quality The build quality is put at a high level in the Polo Bluemotion 2 as to give it a longer lifespan as to create a smaller impact on the environment (Ref12). Increasing the build quality and research into the design/running of the car has increased the price of the Polo Bluemotion 2 over the Standard Polo but here are the benefits of this on the environment : This graph above is showing the decreased emissions of the Bluemotion against its nearest priced brother. (Ref14) The graph below is showing the increased fuel efficiency the Bluemotion has against its nearest priced brother. (Ref14)

Conclusion: Roll on effect on price by the environment Eco-friendly Car (emissions, fuel efficiency) Research + Testing New Technology + Materials Higher Cost Demand for a more eco- friendly Car
