Charles Dickens Careful with spoilers if you know the story!

Daily Journal/10/2014 What do you think of the character of Pip? What kind of protagonist is he? Who is the antagonist in the story? Do you believe in the ability to move above your “station” in life (go from lower class to upper class)?

Let’s discuss the reading using our roles. Discussion Director Summarizer Word Master Story Cartographer Connector Character Curator

Predictions Who do you think is funding Pip? No spoilers if you know! What do you think will happen between Pip and Estella? Who do you suspect attacked Pip’s sister while Joe was away? What do you think of role of Biddy?

Consider Pip’s reaction to the criminal in the cemetery. Discuss what you would do if you were in Pip’s situation. Would you report the criminal to the proper authorities or would you do the same thing Pip did? Why?

Many people in your life have expectations of you. Compare the expectations that you have of yourself to others around you. What do your friends, boyfriend, girlfriend, parents, and teachers expect from you? How are these expectations similar to or different from the ones you have of yourself?

Discuss the role Miss Havisham plays in the novel. Some have said she represents an “imprisoned state of mind.” What does this mean, and do you agree that this is an apt description of Miss Havisham? What do you think of Miss Havisham? Can you guess what motivates her?

Character Traits Thinks… Feels… Has… Is motivated by… For example, Pip thinks_______________ Pip feels _______________ Pip has _______________ Pip is motivated by ______________

Discuss the difference in the portrayal of Miss Havisham :20:00 – 00:24:00

Joe How is Joe portrayed in the gallery opening (Finn is an artist in this version of the story)? Is it different or similar to how you might imagine Joe in the book? Why do you think Finn lies about the story of “Uncle Joe?” – One of the characters quickly mentions that Joe is a drug smuggler which he clearly is not :11:52 – 01:15:00

What are your thoughts on Pip and Estella’s relationship? How are Estella’s feelings for Pip portrayed in this version of the story? 2012 – 01:12:20 to 01:18:00

The End Two endings Dickens’ friend advised against his original ending.
