Evaluating Internet Web Sites Remember: 1.Anyone can create an Internet web site. 2. Not all information you find on the Internet is accurate or objective. 3. In order to get the most out of your on-line research, you must learn to be intelligent, critical users of the Internet.

Domain Names.com = commercial site = organization’s site = governmental site = educational institution’ site = military site

Accuracy Authority Objectivity Currency Coverage What To Look For When Evaluating A Web Site

Accuracy and Authority Does the information seem to be correct? Are the sources listed, if appropriate? Can you determine who the author or editor of the site is? Why are they writing about this topic? Do they have qualifications to write about this topic? Is there a way to contact the person responsible for this site? Site #1 Site #2

Objectivity Is the information full of opinions, or is it mostly facts? Is the author trying to sway your opinion? From whose point of view does the information come? Site # 1Site # 2Site # 3

Currency and Coverage Is the information on the site up-to-date Is there a date on the site? Is it today’s date, the original posting date, or the revision date? Has it been revised lately? Are the links still current? Is this the full text of the material or a summary? Are the links appropriate to the site? Is the site complete or under construction? Site #1 Site #2 Site #3
