MUTATIONS

Pg a. Share what you know about mutations with your elbow partner, come up with three statements you and your partner think are true. Write them in your notebook. b. Share your ideas with the class. c. Then record the class list in your notebook. d. Write if you think the statement is true and why

Period 3 Thoughts about mutations

KCws KCws s&feature=related c&feature=related

We all Make Mistakes We will read pg 436 and 437 (silent). To Focus your reading think about this question: “In what ways do mutations affect organisms?” Answer the following on your paper: 1. What is a mutation? 2. What causes mutations? 3. Are mutations always bad? 4. Why do you know you have mutations? 5. Why can mutations in gametes have a different effect than mutations in non gamete cells?

Part 2 Mutations lead to variability in populations (pg 438) Read instructions on pg 438 Materials Count out 20 seeds into a plastic cup Ruler Balance

Procedure 1. Obtain your seeds 2. Look at the seeds with your partner. Record how these seeds might vary from one to another and record these in your notebook. Ask yourself the following: What kind of differences would you measure in a population? What is one thing that could help you tell the difference between two seeds? How could you group these seeds?

Procedure 3. Decide on one variable to measure and record your variable in your notebook 4. Cut out and glue the provided data table into your notebook 5. Measure/investigate your chosen variable and record it in your data table 6. Cut out the provided graph, glue it into your notebook and graph your results. Don’t forget to label your axis and title your graph

Procedure 7. Analyze your graph by answering the following in complete sentence: Describe the amount of variation you saw in your seeds Describe the shape of your graph-where are most seeds found on the graph? What might have caused the variation in your seeds?

Procedure 8. Read the paragraph on page 439 under #8 and write the answer to this question in your notebook: How do you think variation might be related seed survival? Make sure to clean up and return all equipment and seeds. Turn in your notebook into the green box.
