Background and reason Micronesia – form of government Supported by US in terms financial grants Primary and secondary education Mainly focus on mathematics and language arts Poor achievement in science Develop programs and policies

Low achievement in Science Teachers have little interest because of no knowledge No Science training or workshops Financial Problem Few Science teachers Few teaching materials Order few science materials Not Enough money Not Encourage teachers to create easy-to-make science materials Not enough time to teachers Teachers cannot conduct lessons with new methods Learning is hard for them Many words to memorize No Experiment Teachers don’t know how to carry out experiments

High achievement in Science Teachers are interested because of more knowledge Science training or workshops Enough money Many science teachers More teaching materials Order more science materials Enough money Encourage teachers to create easy-to-make science materials Allocate ample time to teacher Teachers conduct lessons with new methods Learning is easy for them Few words to memorize Experiment Teachers know how to carry out experiments

Content on science education in Japan How the curriculum is modified The four pillars of science The goals What they are trying to develop in teaching science Example of lesson plan Example of how to carry out experiment

Modified Curriculum Science fall into two category: A. Matter and Energy In this field, the importance is given to guiding students in examining the properties, function and changes in state of matter through observations and experiments.  For example: subject include the functions of wind and rubber, an object and its weight, and how to use electricity. B. Life and Earth In this field, the importance is given to guiding students in investigating the life and growth of living things, the structure of their bodies, and various phomena that occur on the surface of the earth, in the atmoshpere, and in space throug observation and models, and in conducting an examination while connecting them with natural disaster.

Four Pillars of Japan Science Education (New Curriculum)… GradeEnergyMattersLifeEarth 3rd 4th 5th 6th

Main Goal of Science Curriculum 1. Become interested in science. 2. Learn basic science concepts. 3. Prepare for further study in science. 4. Develop inquiry skills. 5. Develop a systematic approach to solving problems. 6. Learn to effectively communicate ideas in science. 7. Become aware of the importance of science in daily life. 8. Learn about applications of science in technology. 9. Learn about career relevance of science. 10. Learn about the history of science. 11. Develop awareness of safety issues in the laboratory. 12. Develop skill in laboratory techniques.

What the teachers are trying to develop in teaching science Knowledge and Understanding Skills in communication Attitudes

Example of lesson plan

1. Prepares material2. Introduce 4. Analyze3. Give Problem

Conclusion Help the children in science education won’t encounter the problem with science Thanks the JICA officers especially professor Isoda
