The art of metal relief sculpture Repousse’ The art of metal relief sculpture

Repousse Latin word-literally means “to push”. Technique of raising the image by pushing the metal from the back side of the metal sheet Chasing- is the opposite of repousse’, where the form is pushed into the metal surface. The use of both is also called embossing. Was started about 600 BC as bronze and copper was developed

The sharper the edge-the smaller the head of the tool… The sharper the edge-the smaller the head of the tool…..like on the outline of the fish. The smoother and wider the raised metal….the wider and more dull the edge of the tool. Like the ripples if the water

Notice the hammered background texture this is done with a chasing technique after embossing

Metal on a block of pitch that is turned over and getting ready to be chased.

You can enhance by using sharpie markers and Q-tips to add color

Step 1: Draw three different rough draft designs: 6x8 You want the design to be simple enough to work with the metal, but have enough parts to demonstrate at least 4 layers of relief. Choose your favorite and use that as a stencil on your piece of foil.
